Here in Amsterdam, the sun usually vanishes as soon as it has arrived. Within the time it takes us to get to the beach, the sun has usually already decided to hide again. The struggle. Since other ‘Northern’ European cities, such as London and Berlin, tend to cope with the same #firstworldproblem they’ve found the perfect solution for these summer struggles: a city beach. Exactly 5 years ago Amsterdam was gifted with its first city beach: Strandzuid. It started off as a pop-up location near exhibition and convention centre RAI, without guaranteeing a future at the location. Now, five years later, Strand Zuid has been given permission to stay at its home location and to celebrate this, they’ve given the location a huge transformation. Strandzuid is back and better than ever.

StrandZuid by boat? Not a problem!
Strandzuid is the perfect place to spend an easy Sunday. Arrive by train or boat since the beach is located right next to train station RAI and a canal, where you can tie up your boat. Here you can also relax and enjoy the sun with your feet dangling in the water. Prefer a drier place? Head over to the romantic terrace, which lights up when the sun goes down. How romantic?!
Behind the terrace, you’ll find a beach bar, which includes tables with built-in ice buckets, a beach volleyball field, table tennis tables and fireplace with a lounge area for the chilly summer nights. The Jetty Bar, The Beach Bar and The Beach House are all for rent for any special events, such as birthdays, weddings or family celebrations. Right behind the beach bar, you’ll find the ‘real beach’ where you can lounge and get cosy on stunning old-fashioned beach beds.
Food on the (city) beach
After a day at the beach, you’ll probably be craving food. Therefore, Strandzuid now also hosts its own restaurant, where you can enjoy the perfect beach meal for fish-, meat- and vegan-lovers. We tried the delicious Beach Bowl, Salmon Burger and Vegan Cheesecake (the best!) and we can definitely say we highly recommend them all. The restaurant gives you some serious tropical vibes, as though you’ve been transported to a much warmer place. This mostly has to do with the amazing interior, which was hand-picked and shipped from Bali.
In for even more beach vibes? The evening doesn’t have to end right there because next to the restaurant you’ll find Standzuid’s event room where every weekend DJs play their favourite tracks. Amsterdam’s city beach has everything you need to spend long summer nights, even when the sun is nowhere to be found. Sun or no sun, we’ll be here celebrating our favourite season: summer!
