Bucketlist # 7 | Indoor (VR) Skydiving in Hawaii or is it Roosendaal?

We’ve got ourselves a new best friend called the bucketlist. We love to see each other and do these crazy activities together. So, it’s time to do something fun again. Something that has been on our list forever but we didn’t really dare to do so.

Indoor Skydiving. The feeling of experiencing a real free fall from a plane, only this time in a wind tunnel. The feeling that you are experiencing a real free fall!? Freaking scary, we might say. And therefore, also a reason to add it to the bucket list. Because it is clear that we do like a bit of adventure in our lives. Last time we were at de Nieuwe Meer for an adventurous day of flyboarding. And this time it’s indoor skydiving. Maybe it’s preparation for the real deal. Because hell yeah, that’s on Colourful Rebel’s Bucketlist as well!

Are we at Schiphol airport?

So, we left Amsterdam for a change and had an 2 hour train ride to Roosendaal. But we can promise you one thing: it’s totally worth it. Arrived on location it’s totally what we expected it to be. They created check-in counters as if you are at an airport, ready to leave the country (which is also on our schedule, but we’ll tell you everything later). We gather up with the group we’ll be flying with today and here everyone gets a suit, hairnet, earplugs and plastic glasses to start with. After we’ve put on the suit we may enter a room where the instructions are shown on a screen. In this room the interior looks amazing again. The seats are exactly the same as in an airplane. While we are watching the video, we can hear the wind tunnel blowing in the background. And we have to be honest: we’re a bit scared.

And then it’s time for the real deal. We enter the other room where we can finally see the tunnel. Everyone has a minute in here and it depends on the amount of sessions you have booked how often you can skydive for a minute. We first watch a few people do their thing and it looks way easier than it sounds. But when it’s our turn, it isn’t as easy as it looks like. Once in de tunnel, the instructor holds us tight safely, so we won’t fly from one wall to another. We’ve learned that there are three symbols. One that indicates you to relax, one that tells you the retract your legs and one that tells you the opposite: stretch. And if she shows us the symbols a few times we finally manage to get into the air without holding her hand (for a second maybe). And the time really flies (ha-ha) when you’re having fun.

And when the first minute is finished the only thing you can think is: let’s do this again! Thank god that we’ve booked five sessions, so we could do it again for four more times. Unfortunately, it isn’t going as smooth as we hoped it would go. It’s only five minutes, divided over five times, but we can feel us becoming a bit sore already. It feels like a heavy training. But it isn’t so weird with wind that’s blowing with 187 kilometers per hour. Your body isn’t used to that and it’s something we’ve never experienced.

Say hello to Hawaii

Speaking of something we’ve never experienced: jumping from a plane in Hawaii. And that’s what we were doing next. No, we didn’t fly all the way to Hawaii (it would’ve been possible with the wind tunnel blowing us away that hard). Here in Roosendaal you can go to Hawaii. Indoor Skydive Roosendaal is the only place where you can now also do Indoor VR Skydiving. For this occasion, you get another helmet with VR glasses. We also get a big backpack, which makes it feel even more real. The instructor also tells us she Is holding onto the backpack the whole time, so you won’t feel her carrying you and that gives it that extra touch that makes it feel even more real.

Well, a jump in Hawaii it is. With the VR glasses on, we are ready to dive into the wind tunnel. When the movie starts you can see a man counting down and then you let yourself fall into the tropical air of Hawaii. A little longer than a minute you check everything out and try to see everything that the experience holds for you. It’s like you’re doing a jump with a few friends. It’s such a cool experience that before you know it the movie is over and you are confronted with the reality again. You’re just in a tunnel and not in Hawaii. We wish. But if this is what a free fall feels like, we’re so ready for the real deal.

However, we can now go home and tell everyone we’ve done the coolest thing ever. And with this experience we also get a certificate and to make it even more fun a skydive passport with a big stamp of Hawaii in it. After this experience the train ride home is even more boring.
